This group exhibition is the result of the ten-week Outside In: Step Up course, Exploring Collections, which this year was focused on the art of Ivon Hitchens and other artists in the collection at Pallant House Gallery who depict landscapes, in particular the area of the South Downs. The exhibition can be seen in Room 9 of Pallant House Gallery and runs alongside the main exhibition, Ivon Hitchens: Space through Colour.
The Exploring Collections course has been running for ten years and was designed to support artists who face barriers to the art world to research and respond to works of art in museum and gallery collections. I have been running at Pallant House Gallery since its inception and also at the Wellcome Collection in Euston, London. The course is now being rolled out to a number of partner venues.
Over the years, I have witnessed how the Exploring Collections process of research, discovery and response can lead to new directions in participants’ creative practice; until this year, I had not experienced it in my own art. I will exhibit one small painting alongside a variety of wonderful works by the four artists who took part in the course.
